December 31, 1958

Dear Alan:

I'm sorry to have to report that we didn't even get to consider your proposal. The second and last meeting of the Executive Council ran from 10:00 PM until 1:00 AM and there were other items that had to be settled.

The get some authentic texts for the recordings, I suggest that you get in touch with the following Spanish teachers in NY: Professor Ernesto Da Cal, Washington Square College, NYU, NY 3. He may be in Spain this year. Professor Alejandro Arratia, CCNY, 17 Lexington Ave., NY 10. Prof. Anthony Tudisco, Columbia Univ., NY 27. Prof. María Teresa Babín, NYU, NY 3. You might try them in the above order. Thye, or someone they recommend, may be willing to listen to the recordings and write down the texts. It's a hell of a tough job, as you doubtless know, because of dialectical difficulties, old and broken voices, etc.

As to our Association sponsoring the recordings, I fear that the Council would say No. The best that you and Westminster could do would be to send a set of the recordings for review in Hispania. Then advertise them in Hispania, quoting from reviews there and in other sources, perhaps offering a discount to purchasers who are members of the AATSP. The Advertising Manager is George Cushman, at Choate.

I'm sure that one of the sessions of the annual meeting of our Association would be much interested in hearing you put on a show such as the one we heard at the MLA English Section. We meet in Chicago in 1959, December 29 and 30. Your commentary could be in English or Spanish. If this idea interests you, let me know quite soon and I'll put you in touch with the Chairman of the appropriate person. Let me repeat that Donna and I found your performance fascinating.

Cordially,
[firma:] Don [en la carpeta se indica que se trata de Robert Meade, J.R.]
